The Submerging Republic of the Marshall Islands Dispatch | Messages of Global Hope… A refreshing look at the human races extraordinary achievements in the battle against environmental tragedy.

"What do you do when your island home
is in the cross hairs of climate change
and faces forever being swallowed
by the tide of a rising ocean?"

In Our Kids Lifetime…

As we continue to research for this upcoming shoot, it becomes more and more undeniable that the children born today will grow up and undoubtedly witness the true effects of Climate Change. It is astounding to think that my kids could potentially watch entire nations (like the Republic of the Marshall Islands), be overtaken by not other nations at war, but the ocean itself.rmi_flood

- December floods in RMI –

This makes the importance of Thomas Goreau and his team’s work very incredible to say the least. As we speak Thomas is in the midst of very taking ambitious steps to battle the effects of climate change. It is unreal the extensive knowledge he has of global severity of these issues and how dire the situation really is. I cant help but first, admire he and his team’s perseverance and determination, and secondly continually ask myself the same question:

If I was faced with knowing the true dark facts of the planets critical state that he does, and if I were to have his understanding of the massive changes that we as a human race need to take in order to reverse these severe issues, at what point would I have given up and stuck my head in the sand?

An ambitious experiment:

By all predictions the Marshall Islands (along with many other tropical island nations) will be permanently flooded by the year 2100. Thomas and team are not just putting their faith into their vision that the technology in which they are installing will provide the temporary shore protection needed to stop the annual flooding of the RMI, but they are also ambitiously counting on the rest of the world (6 billion or so people) to change it’s appetite, policies and over all values to help reverse at least some of the effects of Global Warming. If both of these parts of his experiment are successful, our children could see the 65,000 residents of the Marshall Islands (not to mention the millions of others who live on neighboring threatened islands) able to keep their homes.
