Water … It’s a bit of a luxury around here.
The average home here does not have access to reliable water and the poorer locals drink water from the underground springs, which is slightly contaminated by salt water and sometimes due to toxins leaching in from poor sanitation and waste removal can be lead to disease. Thankfully our hotel does have clean water, I have to say I was pretty stoked on a hot shower when I arrived here after 40 plus hours of travel. All of the water the hotel uses is harvested from rainwater. Those who can afford it buy large plastic reservoirs to hold the rainwater. To collect it they channel all of the rain that falls on the roofs into the containers – it’s a pretty simple process really.
You start to really appreciate the rain when you realize that it really is your only source of clean water. I have spoken with a few locals about the change in weather and they have all said that they experiencing more and more droughts, which challenges their access to clean water.
Further perspective for me that the things I take for granted at home are not always so prevalent in other places of the world.
