“…if less than 0.1% of the renewable energy in the oceans could be converted to electricity, it would satisfy the present world demand for energy five times over.”

Two of the Green Energy Technologies that are being installed to power the Biorock Project we are documenting in the Marshall Islands are being built by Natural Currents, a company that is at the forefront of developing state-of-the-art Tidal and Wind Turbine Generators. During our time on Arno we will document the installation of first, a Wind Turbine which operates with 1000 times less friction than any other turbine currently on the market. And secondly the install of a Tidal Turbine that when operational will set global precedence in the development of sustainable energy through use of the worlds oceans.
The energy produced from these two generators will be initially applied to power the Biorock shore protection structures, but the benefits dont stop there. Motivated to further show the world that there are clean avenues that we as humans can look to to provide energy for our communities, Thomas Goreau and team will be giving the local communities on Arno access to the clean surplus power produced from these generators. These people who up until now have had very little access to any form of reliable power will have access to a constant flow of clean energy, produced by some of the world’s most advanced technology.
You would think that this project would be better suited to be carried out in a more profile area such as New York, Seattle or New Orleans, but Goreau has specifically chosen this under developed nation to test out this technology and a theory. As western nations we have developed an insatiable appetite for energy – one that needs to be un-sustainably fed even at the obvious expense of our environment, Thomas Goreau feels that we have traveled too far down this road of dependency to really recognize the value or blessing from this tidal and wind technology and chances. It’s Goreau’s opinion that if you grant access to these new clean resources to underdeveloped nations like the Marshall Islands who have yet to develop our at-any-expense-appetite for dirty energy, we may be able to see these nations develop and become sustainably industrialized. Maintaining a healthy balance that we as westerners lost almost a century ago, one that sees them maintain the close relationship with their environment while developing their communities.
